The covenants of the Bible were legal treaties between God and his people. In the ancient world when a treaty was broken, the King making the treaty would institute a lawsuit against the covenant breakers. There were two stages in the lawsuit. First the king would send messengers to the guilty parties. If these messenger were ignored and especially if they were killed, the lawsuit would go into its second phase, a declaration of war on the guilty. Every covenantal age of the Bible ends with God sending one or more messengers to warn covenant breakers of God’s impending judgment on them if they do not repent.
