A chiasm is a literary structure where the words or themes of the first section of a passage are repeated in reverse order in the second. Typically whatever is in the center of the chiasm is what is being emphasized. In the chiasm of Genesis 6:5-8 the emphasis is on God’s determination to blot out not only sinful man from the earth but also animals, creeping things and birds (Gen 6:7a-b).
