Genesis 1:1 is a summary statement of the six days of creation, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” That this is a summary statement of the six days can be seen by first noting that on Day 2 (Gen 1:6-8) is the creation of the heavens and then Day 4 describes the filling of the heavens with the sun, moon and stars (Gen 1:14-19) and Day 5 describes the filling of the heavens with birds (Gen 1:20-30). Then on Day 3 he created the earth and on Day 6 filled the earth with animals and man.
