Genesis 2:4-5 has a similar structure to Genesis 1:1-2: There is a summary statement of what will follow (Gen 1:1; 2:4) which is followed by the existing condition at the beginning of the account (Gen 12:2; 2:5a). Genesis 2:5b then gives the reason for the existing condition of Genesis 2:5a.
