The Chiasm of Deuteronomy 20: Rules of Warfare
Deuteronomy 29 is written as chiasm, a literary structure where the themes of the first section of a passage are repeated in the second. Typically whatever is in the center of the chiasm is what is being emphasized. In Deuteronomy 20, the emphasis is on the instructions to offer terms of peace to a city before attacking it (Deut 20:10-18).
