A chiasm is a literary structure where vocabulary of the first section of a passage is repeated in reverse order in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In John 11:46-57 the center and climax is Caiaphas the high priest saying, “It is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish” (John 11:49-52).
