The Chiasm of Mark 4:1
A chiasm is a literary structure where vocabulary of the first section of a passage is repeated in reverse order in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In Mark 4:1 the center is that, because of the very large crowd, Jesus “got into a boat in the sea and sat down,” following the first century custom of sitting to teach.
