A chiasm is a literary structure where vocabulary and themes of the first section of a passage are repeated in reverse order in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In Mark 4:16-17 the center is “they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while” (Mark 4:17a-b).
