A chiasm is a literary structure where the words of the first section of a passage are repeated in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In Matthew 12:36-37, the climax is that people “shall give an accounting… in the day of judgment” for every careless word (Matt 12:36b).
