A chiasm is a literary structure where the words of the first section of a passage are repeated in reverse order in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In Matthew 17:14-18, the climax is Jesus’ questions, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you?” (Matt 17:17).
