In Mark 4 Jesus gives a series of parables. After giving the parable of the sower in verses 3-9, he then explains the meaning of the parable to his followers, but not to “those who are outside” (4:11). The introduction to his explanation in 4:10-11a and the conclusion in 4:33-34 form a chiasm, contrasting the insiders, his disciples and other followers, from the “outsiders” who only heard the parables.
