For understanding the structure of Genesis 1:1-2:3, Genesis 1:1 gives the theme, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:2 is the most significant verse for understanding how the rest of chapter 1 is organized: the word “formless” is answered by days 1-3 as God gives form to what was formless. The word “void” is answered by days 4-6 where God fills the void of the creations of days 4-6. In addition these days show how the creations of days 1-3 are ruled. The remaining phrases of Genesis 1:2 show how the problems of Genesis 1:2 are answered. The problem of “darkness” is answered by days 1 and 4, the problem of the “deep” is answered by days 2 and 5, and the problem of the “waters” is finally answered by Days 3 and 6. Genesis 2:1-3 indicates the completion of creation
